Third, don't outsource your judgment to the salesperson. I'm not a CNC expert, and I never pretended to be. But I could ask the right questions: What's the training plan? What's the support response time? What's the upgrade path? You don't need to be an engineer to evaluate those.
Fourth, "best" doesn't exist. This solution works for 80% of cases. How do you know if you're in the other 20%? Read the limitations section of their documentation. If they don't have a limitations section, that's probably a limitation.
Honestly, I'm still not sure why Vendor A's control software hype didn't match their actual software. My best guess is that they were selling features to buyers who didn't ask enough questions. I've also never fully understood the pricing logic for these systems—the variance between quotes was way bigger than I expected. That said, I now have a process that keeps me from getting swept up in the excitement.
