Fanuc CNC Costs: A Procurement Manager's Take on Programming, G71 Turning, Press Brakes, and Welding
I pulled the numbers for this article from our cost tracking system on January 15, 2025. After six years of managing a $420,000 annual machining budget, I keep landing on the same conclusion: the cheapest Fanuc CNC setup is usually the most expensive one by the time you count programming errors, missed deadlines, and the wrong process for the job. G71 is a rough turning cycle on Fanuc controls. You define the finished profile in a P-Q block, and the control figures out the roughing passes. It sounds simple, but the finishing allowances in U and W can make or break the part. If those values are off, you can leave too much stock or machine into a shoulder. Brake attachment for hydraulic press: the hidden line item
I almost made a $3,500 mistake on a brake attachment for our hydraulic press. One vendor quoted $3,500 for the attachment. Another quoted $5,200 for the same press model with a matched interface. The first quote looked like the obvious choice until I added everything up: $450 for a custom adapter, $600 in extra freight because it shipped from a different warehouse, and an estimated $2,100 in lost production hours because the tooling didn't line up with our existing dies. Total project cost: $6,650. The $5,200 option included the adapter, the freight, and the alignment kit. That's a $1,450 difference hidden in fine print.
That's the moment I stopped approving equipment purchases without a TCO worksheet. Now our procurement policy requires quotes from three vendors, and every quote has to include setup, integration, tooling compatibility, and downtime.
TIG welding vs laser welding: the answer is it depends—and that's a real answer
People ask me whether TIG welding or laser welding is a better investment. My honest answer: it depends on the job. For short-run stainless assemblies with complex joints, TIG still wins for us. Setup is flexible, the capital cost is lower, and changeover takes minutes. For high-volume, thin-wall seams on repeat parts, laser welding produces less heat distortion and runs much faster.
We bought a 1.5 kW laser welder in March 2024. I approved the purchase and then immediately second-guessed it. What if the operator couldn't dial in the parameters? What if the jobs disappeared? I didn't relax until the first batch came out flat and square. That machine paid for part of its own cost in the first quarter, but only because we had 12 repeat jobs lined up. Before those jobs existed, TIG was the right call.
If you're considering the same decision, don't ask which process is better. Ask which process gives you the lowest total cost for the actual parts in your order book.
Where I don't have hard data
I don't have hard data on industry-wide defect rates or average laser welding ROI. I can only speak to our records and our shop. If you're a high-mix, low-volume job shop, my laser welder math probably doesn't apply. If you're producing thousands of identical parts a month, the G71 training payback might be even faster than ours. Your mileage depends on your mix, your operators, and your current scrap rate.
What I can tell you anecdotally: most cost problems in our shop weren't caused by one bad invoice. There's no single best Fanuc CNC setup, brake attachment, or welding process. There's only the best fit for your next 24 months of work. If you want to cut costs, don't start with the price list.
